8/9/2023 0 Comments Hades review xbox oneTaking on foes in the extremely unsubtly titled “Barge of Death”. The same goes for charms that summon NPCs to your side, though you don’t get those for some time into the game. You can also equip special items given to you by NPCs that will grant you greater damage, an extra life and so on and even swap them out in between dungeons, though once you’ve used one once you can’t re-equip it again in the same run. As you go through a run you pick up Darkness which can be used to buy permanent upgrades to health, extra “lives” (or tokens for “death defiance”) and other such upgrades, and later on you can spend Titan Blood on permanently upgrading the six unique weapons, which is where Hades slides into the “Roguelite” side of things, though all the other Boons and buffs are lost in between each run. Each time you die you go back to the hub world where you can talk to NPCs and move the story on a bit before picking a new weapon and heading back for another run. Hades is an isometric action game with Roguelike elements (or a “Rougelite” as the phrase goes) where you control Zagreus as he dashes, hacks and slashes across several dungeons with a variety of weapons, both close and long range, plus a unique Cast attack as well, where Zagreus can throw a crystal “Cast” into the enemy and do extra damage if an enemy has the object stuck in them. It was later ported to the PS4, PS5, XBOX One and XBOX Series X/S on August 13 th 2021. Hades was officially released for PC and Nintendo Switch on September 17 th 2020, though it had been on Steam Early Access since December 2018, allowing the community to give feedback to the Dev team in real time. Hades is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, and is playable through Xbox Game Pass.Ever seen a Greek God with a minigun? Well, you have now! Perhaps this time, armed with a better controller, I’ll even manage to topple the game’s true final boss, Charon. But I’m right back in the thick of it, just 18 escape attempts in, already making things harder for myself with the game’s Pact of Punishment and other self-imposed challenges. They happen faster than anticipated I was certain going back into the game that I’d be slightly bored reacquiring all of Zagreus’ abilities, weapons, trinkets, and other aspects of the game. On the other hand, it’s been a pleasant surprise to see Hades’ perfectly paced gameplay mechanics unfurl again on a new playthrough. I’m zooming through the game’s rich dialogue and organic character development, hastily uncovering truths about Zagreus’ history and befriending every Olympian in record time. What once felt like a challenge now feels like a speedrun. As a still-underpowered Zagreus, I managed to best Hades and escape the Underworld on my 13th attempt. I blitzed through much of its story revelations this go round, which felt bittersweet. The act of playing it again has certainly been different. (Though it is certainly nice to see Hades load more quickly and look sharper on PS5.) It is nearly identical to its previously released counterparts: It’s still the same amazingly addictive roguelike action-adventure that made Hades Polygon’s 2020 game of the year. For as much as I loved playing Hades on the Switch, I love it even more on PS5.īeyond that, I have little to add that might surprise you about the PS5 version of Hades that I’ve been playing this week. Or rather, the DualSense is simply a better, more responsive controller than the standard Joy-Cons that come with the Switch, and not having to wrestle with the lag, drift, and lost connections that plague Nintendo’s detachable controllers makes Hades so much more enjoyable.
